If anything, the recent Rotavirus scare in Perak reminds us yet again that our children are never free from the threat of infectious diseases. Viruses, bacteria and all kinds of germs roam freely in schools, canteens, restaurants, and even shopping malls, and it is highly difficult to evade the onslaught of pathogens, whether they are foodborne, waterborne, airborne or transmitted by touch.
On average, kids suffer 8 to 12 colds yearly and trips to the cline may happen almost monthly. On top of that, kids also have to contend with diseases like coughs, fever, diarrhea, HFM (hand, foot and mouth) disease and other infectious illnesses. An unwelcome intrusion, frequent illnesses disrupt familiar routines, incur extra expenses and affect academic achievements.
Medication for these illnesses often treat symptoms such as runny nose and cough or try to kill the bacteria causing the illness, but they don’t do much to treat the root cause of the children’s constant sickness, which is a weak immune system. Hence, the child tends to fall ill again the next time he is exposed to another type of pathogen.
Instead of treating the symptoms (and spending on medical bills), why not treat the source of the problem, i.e. the weak immune system? With a stronger body, the child will be more able to withstand the nasty invasion of bad germs and viruses that seek to knock him down.
Building A child’s Defences
How do you build a strong immune system? As usual, Mother Nature knows best. The first food of a child through breastfeeding is colostrum, also named the ‘perfect food’ for newborns by the World Health Organisation. Nature’s own highly-charged food contains a host of immune factors and growth factors to kickstart the baby’s immune system, and is the reason why breastfed kids generally have stronger immune systems than non-breastfed kids. Consider these findings:
- Infants who were exclusively formula-fed had an 80% increased risk of developing diarrhea and a 70% increased risk of developing an ear infection compared with exclusively breastfed infants.
- Bottle-fed children under 4 months were 25% more likely to be diagnosed with allergy and than exclusively breastfed children.
Why Colostrum?
Colostrum is one of the few natural foods that contain Immune Factors (IF) and Growth Factors (GF). The incredibly rich combination of IF in bovine colostrum makes it the most powerful immune-boosting food available. According to Annals of the New York Academy of Science, the immunoglobulins in colostrum are able to neutralize the most harmful bacteria, viruses and yeasts. Other researchers have discovered that IF in colostrum can kill bacteria and virus, balance the immune system, control inflammation and hinder the development of illness and disorders, making it an important arsenal against pathogens for children.
The GF in colostrum are also vitally unique. According to the University of Arizona, GF in colostrum causes the growth and reproduction of cells and the quick strong healing and regrowth means there is usually less scarring. Colostrum also has the ability to stimulate tissue repair and optimize cellular reproduction, making it perfect for children who often fall victim to cuts, scrapes and wounds.
