For thousands of years, honey has been used by the Ancient Greeks and other civilizations for its antibacterial, healing and health-enchancing properties . Whether consumed internally or applied externally , it is one of nature’s oldest remedies and has been hailed as one of earth’s greatest gifts to mankind.
Medical literature is filled with reports attesting to the power of honey to successfully treat problems such as wounds, burns, skin ulcers, boils and infections. The list of honey benefits seem endless.
Healing wounds A 1998 report for the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration noted the four antibacterial attributes of honey; low water content, acidity, hydrogen peroxide content, and other ‘uncharacterised’ antibacterial compounds. The following year, the Administration approved honey for medical use and medical honey is now sold as a wound dressing in pharmacies there.
In 2008 the journal, Clinical Infectious Diseases, reported a study by the University of Amsterdam in which medical-grade honey was shown to be extremely effective in killing bacteria, even drug-resistant bacteria, on the skin.
Cough and sore throat soother All over the world, honey has been widely used to soothe sore throats. Researchers have even found it to be as effective in easing coughs as cough mixture.
Other benefits Besides healing wounds and soothing coughs, honey also offers powerful antioxidant and cleansing for our body; is a potent immune booster; has carcinogen-preventing and anti-tumour properties; has amazing healing properties as a head-to-toe remedy – from eye conjunctivitis to athlete’s foot; and offers beauty and skin care solutions for ladies as well.
